OUR ENEMY, THE STATE
by Albert Jay Nock
"The Police, Army, Navy and Highway Patrol... most regulations
help one class of people, while leading to higher costs for every-one else."
We are proud to offer our readers this classic anti-authoritarian
book. The prevailing ideology of the twentieth century, especially strong
among the intellectuals, but infecting all other ranks as well, is faith
in political panaceas for economic and social woes. Ideologues quarrel
among themselves. Sectarian differences divide communists from nazis, socialists
from fascists, new dealers from welfare staters, and so on. Statists vary
in plumage and program, but on one thing they all agree; one and all they
demand a centralized State with virtually unlimited authority to oversee
every aspect of life. They do not examine the State itself to determine
whether it is within the State's competence to achieve the tasks they would
thrust upon it ¾ which is why their allegedly good intentions invariably
lead to contrary, and sometimes disastrous, results. Nock understands the
nature of the State, and so will the reader who follows his analysis.
One of the finest anti-authoritarian works ever written.
