Caught Looking applauds sexual pleasure and diversity. In
this collection, feminist writings on issues of pornography, censorship
and sexuality are paralleled by sexually explicit imagery dating from the
1890s to the present. The women who created Caught Looking
chose these images to surprise, excite and delight. Together, these images
and texts respond directly to conservative efforts at censorship. Caught
Looking invites women to further explore their own sexuality.
Caught Looking combines
serious essays by feminists, explicit visuals, and an attitude both probing
and playful. It will bewilder some with its provocative nature, but will
excite far more with its boldness. Caught Looking began as
a collection of essays, all written between 1978 and 1986, that were compiled
by the Feminist Anti-Censorship Task Force to serve activist ends. As the
project developed, so did the ambition of the artists. They began to envision
a greater goal for Caught Looking. Why not a book that examined
a wide range of pornographic material? Why not a pornographic collection
that would itself have to run the gauntlet of potential censors? (For sale
to adults only.)
